Washington, November 28 (RHC) -– Officials with the U.S. Defense Department said that all has been set to transfer more detainees over the next few weeks from the prison camp located at the US naval base in the Cuban territory of Guantanamo, despite opposition by republicans.
According to The Wall Street Journal, another group of prisoners will be transferred in December, after five were flown out of the base last week.
The Pentagon officials, who preferred to go anonymous, did not give more information on the nationality or number of prisoners that would be transferred out of the prison camp.
Before taking office, U.S. President Barack Obama promised to shut down the prison camp in Guantanamo, but the proposal has found strong opposition by republican congress people.
The new transfer of prisoners from the base takes place after the resignation of Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, who was criticized by US administration officials for acting passively as to the certification of the detainees that may be released.
