Brasilia, January 16 (RHC) -— The Brazilian government announced the expansion of its health program with more doctors from other countries, particularly from Cuba, to work in another 424 remote areas of the country.
Brazil's Health Minister Arthur Chioro told reporters that there are no medical posts yet, although priorities will favor those communities with high poverty levels and low human development indicators.
With the initiative, the number of municipalities under the More Doctors Program could reach up to 4,209, out of a total of 5,570, said the minister.
The expansion of this program aims at assisting people in need, those living in poor settlements, on the outskirts of big cities and in rural and indigenous communities, said the official.
The More Doctors Program was implemented in 2013 and it has thus far been backed by 14 thousand 462 physicians, out of whom 11 thousand 429 are Cubans, and 1 thousand 187 come from other countries; the rest are Brazilian doctors.
