Ankara, February 5 (RHC) -– Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will pay a visit to Cuba, as part of a three-leg Latin American tour that will also take him to Colombia and Mexico, starting February 10th, according to a statement issued Thursday by the presidency's press office.

Erdogan's talks during the visits will focus on regional and international developments, bilateral relations and signing cooperation agreements in different fields. His visit to the region is the first for a Turkish president since 1995, the statement added.

Earlier, news reports said that Erdoğan would oversee the beginning of construction of a mosque when he visits Cuba in mid-February.

However, Presidential Spokesman İbrahim Kalın said that “there is no plan to lay the groundwork for a mosque during the Cuba visit. It's not on our program.”

A Turkish delegation traveled in April to Cuba to seek permission to build a mosque in the Cuban capital of Havana. Turkish media has subsequently reported, however, that Cuban authorities rejected the request, submitted by Turkey's Religious Affairs Foundation (TDV).
