Havana, September 15 (RHC)-- The President of the Republic of Namibia, Hage Gottfried Geingob, is in Havana on an official visit to reaffirm the excellent bonds of cooperation existing between the two countries. The Namibian president arrived at the Jose Marti International Airport on Monday afternoon, where he was received by Deputy Foreign Minister Rogelio Sierra and members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Havana. Upon his arrival, the Namibian president spoke with reporters about the state of diplomatic relations between his country and Cuba. He said: "We have excellent relations. I am here as the new president, and because we're such good friends, the first place I thought I should visit outside of Africa is Cuba. That's why I'm here."
The Namibian leader's official visit to Cuba will end on Thursday, September 17th. Namibia and Cuba commemorate the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year, established on March 21, 1990. Since then, according to the Cuban Foreign Ministry, both countries maintain good communications and exchanges in economy, trade, education, health, culture, sports and construction. Nearly 350,000 Cuban voluntary workers have given medical services in that Southern Africa country since 1991 to date; while more than 1,000 Namibians have been trained in Cuba, thanks to the cooperation existing in the education sector. Cuba takes pride in having contributed to the achievement of Namibia’s independence, a nation that for decades has supported the struggle of the Caribbean nation to put an end to the blockade imposed on the island by the United States for over half a century.
