China and Brazil propose peace initiatives

By Roberto Morejón

In a world in which a regional power such as Israel, with the military support of the United States, is extending the genocide it committed in Gaza to Lebanon, initiatives to resolve conflicts anywhere on the planet, such as in Ukraine, should be welcomed.

Hence the interest of several nations, including Cuba, in the diplomatic moves of China and Brazil in relation to the war in Eastern Europe, in an effort to reach a peaceful solution.

In his speech at the seventy-ninth UN General Assembly, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla pointed out that his country is in favor of a diplomatic solution to the war in Ukraine, which he described as serious, constructive, realistic and by peaceful means.

The head of Antillean diplomacy stressed that such a solution must be in accordance with international law, which guarantees the security and sovereignty of all.

In this context, he stressed that Cuba supports the joint proposal presented by China and Brazil for a political solution to the crisis in Ukraine.

Incidentally, diplomats from Beijing and Brasilia chaired a meeting in New York attended by 17 countries of the global South, calling for the search for alternative peaceful solutions to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his Brazilian counterpart Mauro Vieira emphasized that the countries of the South can play a constructive role in defending peace.

For several weeks, China has been promoting a six-point proposal presented jointly with Brazil in May, which advocates avoiding an escalation of the conflict in Ukraine and calls for an international peace conference through fair debate.

In what is presented as the promotion of a constructive role in relation to a scenario of worrying tensions for the whole world, the emphasis on identifying this platform as "friends of peace" is striking, since international concord and, if possible, the reduction of the sources of war on the planet are premises of the foreign policy of the largest of the Antilles, a Caribbean country that defends international law and is committed to the United Nations Charter.

In this sense, Havana is in favor of a serious, constructive and realistic diplomatic solution to the current crisis in Europe, as Rodríguez Parrilla emphasized at the United Nations.

The guarantee of the security and sovereignty of all, as well as regional and international peace and stability, are urgent, which is why initiatives such as those outlined by China and Brazil are worthy of attention.
