Integrating scientific results into production and service processes

By María Josefina Arce

Science and technology parks are defined as a space to promote the advancement of science and technology and favor the socio-economic development of the country, which in recent decades have been gaining ground in the world geography.

They stimulate and manage the flow of knowledge and technology between universities, research institutions, companies and markets.

In Cuba, the first of these organizations managed by specialists will be created in 2020, which is a sign of the government's willingness to transform the results of scientific activity into productive processes and services for the benefit of citizens.

This scientific and technological park is located in the University of Computer Science of Havana, which has grown and expanded its activities in the four years of its management.

According to the president of this institution, Rafael Luis Torralbas, the park has a portfolio of 357 clients, including 15 foreign ones with representation in Germany, Spain, Canada, Italy, China, Brazil and Chile.

In statements to Granma newspaper, he said that by the end of the first semester of this year there were 85 research, development and innovation projects, of which 56 are in execution, 16 are in the process of being completed and 13 have been completed with results.

The University of Matanzas also operates one of these facilities, which began operations in January 2021 and has a broad portfolio of services for the benefit of the economy, informatization of society and government management.

One of its projects is Varadero Digital City, a management system for the rational use of energy in the hotels of the famous tourist pole and plans for the digital transformation of the entities of the territory.

Initiatives are also promoted for the development of energy, sports and medical robotics, in alliance with the new actors of the economy.

And in recent months, the Villa Clara Scientific and Technological Industrial Park has been created to provide solutions to the problems of the Caribbean nation's industrial sector.

Cuba is committed to promoting the link between the knowledge sector, businesses and the territory to increase the well-being of communities and the country.
