Havana, October 15 (RHC-ACN)- Cuba has announced its decision to join the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), which currently groups 183 countries.

“In keeping with the peace-loving nature of the Cuban people, we are in the process of consultation with the organizations involved to join the CTBTO, Cuba’s Minister of Science, Technology and the Environment (CITMA) Elba Rosa Perez Montoya, said Tuesday in Havana.

The minister was speaking at a Workshop on Science and Scientific Diplomacy, held at Havana’s Hotel Nacional de Cuba.

She explained that the treaty has technologies to detect nuclear tests, but also to prevent and warn about natural disasters, including earthquakes. “We can benefit from access to information, collaboration with other nations, thus strengthening the seismological early warning system,” she said.

The Cuban minister of science, technology and the environment assured that this is further evidence of how science can be used for peaceful purposes, and regretted that not all governments profess such noble and constructive aims --this in reference to Washington’s nearly six decades-old economic, financial and commercial blockade of Cuba.

CTCBO Executive Secretary Lassina Zerbo attended the Havana workshop. He said Cuba is a clear example of collaboration aimed at uniting nations against climate change, eradication of poverty and diseases.
