Havana, July 12 (RHC)-- The 10th Sara González Political Song Contest will take place virtually July 13th from Havana’s Teatro Nacional de Cuba, on occasion of the 70th birthday anniversary of Sara and the 60th anniversary of Cuba’s Interior Ministry.
Maestro Hugo Oslé, Director of the Mariana de Gonitch Singing Academy, which sponsors the event, told Radio Reloj that participants will perform emblematic pices from Sara’s vast repoertoire like ‘Su nombre es pueblo’, ‘Plegaria a un labrador’, ‘Girón, la victoria’, among others.
The jury, presided over by musician Emilio Vega, will award the best performers a Grand Prize, as well as a First, Second and Third prizes.
Cuban trova musician Sara González was one of the greatest exponents of the Nueva Trova Movement and of the Grupo de Experimentación Sonora del ICAIC, directed by famed guitar player, orchestra conductor and composer Leo Brower.
She shared the stage with other great Cuban and foreign artists like Silvio Rodríguez, Pablo Milanés, Noel Nicola, Joan Manuel Serrat, Chico Buarque, Mercedes Sosa, Soledad Bravo, Daniel Viglietti, Pete Seeger, Roy Brown, Pedro Guerra, Beth Carvalho and Liuba María Hevia, among many others.
Sara González is the author of several patriotic songs like ‘Girón, la victoria’, which is a tribute to Cuban martyrs of the 1961 mercenary invasion at Playa Girón or in English Bay of Pigs.
