Havana, August 18 (RHC)-- A program of activities has begun nationwide to mark the 60th anniversary of the Association of Cuban Writers and Artists (UNEAC). Activities on Tuesday, August 17th, included the reopening of refurbished facilities at UNEAC national headquarters in Havana.

The official campaign was launched on August 13th, celebrating also the 95th birthday anniversary of Cuban revolution leader Fidel Castro.

Other activities this week include the inauguration of the collective exhibition ‘Aquí estamos,’ (We’re Here), comprising 40 works by Cuban artists –members of UNEAC from across the country.

The open sky exhibition at UNEAC headquarters will remain open, available to passersby, for two to three months.

Other actions on Tuesday included an homage-paying ceremony dedicated to Spanish poet Federico García Lorca, with poetry recitals, a puppet show by the company Teatro de Las Estaciones, directed by National Theatre Prize laureate Rubén Darío Salazar and a musical recital –all at UNEAC gardens under strict compliance with physical distancing and other measures in place to confront the Covid-19 pandemic.

The aim was to pay tribute to Lorca on the 85th anniversary of his assassination.

UNEAC President Luis Morlote Rivas, recalled that the 1st Congress of Cuban Writers and Artists, held from August 18th through the 22nd, in 1961, began precisely with a tribute to Federico García Lorca. That first congress ended with the creation of UNEAC in a ceremony on August 22nd, 1961, attended by Cuban Revolution leader Fidel Castro.

Activities on the 60th anniversary of UNEAC extend through December 2021, with activities planned all across the country.
