Five medals for Cuba in the Pan American Weightlifting Championship

Havana, April 20 (RHC)-- Five medals were won by Cuban participants in the 61 kg division at the Pan American Weightlifting Championship, held in Parque del Este, Dominican Republic.

Otto Oñate won the bronze medal in the snatch and the subtitles in the rebound and total, with heights of 120, 156 and 276 kilograms, respectively.

His teammate Arley Calderón finished fourth in the first exercise, third in the second and in the biathlon, with marks of 119, 155 and 274 kilograms, in that order.

The category was dominated by Colombian favorite Francisco Mosquera, although specialists considered that he was not yet in top form.

Félix Machín, head of the Cuban technical team, told JIT in a brief communication that Otto and Arley fulfilled what was foreseen for the stage.

Let's remember that the main importance of this race is that it offers points for the ranking that will define the last tickets to the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

On the same day, the women's 45 kg and men's 55 kg divisions were also disputed.

In the women's division, the medals were shared identically in the two movements and the total, with the American Cicely Kyle winning the titles, ahead of the Mexicans Diana Chay (silver) and Viviana Muñoz (bronze).

In the men's category, Dominican Yeison Michel won the start ahead of Colombian Miguel Suarez and Mexican Jose Poox.

However, in the repulsion and biathlon, Suarez reigned, leaving the Aztec in silver and bronze, and the Dominican in bronze and silver, respectively.
