Havana, July 6 (RHC)-- Cuba's Arlettys Acosta (67 kilograms) won Thursday the gold medal in taekwondo at the XXIV Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, sub venue of the event.

Acosta defeated Haiti's Lee Ava Soon 2-1 in the final; before that, she defeated Leslie Soltero, from Mexico, 2-0 in the semifinals and Madelyn Rodríguez, from the Dominican Republic, 2-0 in the quarterfinals.

The 24-year-old girl showed her dominance on the tatami of the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center during her three performances today, in front of hundreds of athletes from several countries and her fellow countrymen who cheered her on during the bouts.

Meanwhile, Cuban Tamara Robles also won bronze in the 57 kilograms division, after losing 0-2 in the semifinals against Lindo Nashy, from Costa Rica. Robles defeated Alisson Montano of El Salvador in the quarterfinals, 2-1.

With Acosta's victory, the Cuban national team has now won two gold medals in this discipline in the multisport event.

Two-time world champion Rafael Alba won the gold medal the day before with a 2-1 victory over Carlos Sansores, from Mexico. Tomorrow, the taekwondo competitions of the XXIV Games will conclude.
