Matanzas, July 25 (PL) - The Cuban resort city of Varadero will host the second edition of the Gran Retto Open Water event on September 16 and 17.
Under the auspices of the Mexican brand Gran Retto, and with the support of the Cuban Ministry of Tourism and the trading company Cubadeportes S.A., the event will involve swimmers, triathletes, clubs, swimming schools and the general public from Cuba and foreign countries in order to promote open water swimming.
According to the website www.radio26.cu, as in the first edition held in 2022, the competition will include 750 and 1,500 meters, five and 10 kilometers in age categories and a special one for people with disabilities.
Promoting tourism in the largest Antillean Island in terms of sports competitions is one of the purposes of the Gran Retto Open Waters in Cuba, which will showcase its hotel potential through the services of the Meliá Las Américas, Starfish Varadero and Starfish Cuatro Palmas facilities.
In the first edition of the Gran Retto, more than 150 swimmers attended the event representing countries such as Colombia, the United States, Mexico and Cuba, ranging in age from under 10 years old to over 70 years old.
During the debut of the event in 2022, the director of the Gran Retto brand, Luis Mario Villareal, said that Varadero is an ideal place for this type of open water competitions thanks to its unparalleled climate, which is why the event is expected to be held annually, an objective that will be achieved in 2023.
