Havana, October 12 (RHC) -- The University of Physical Education and Sports Sciences (Uccfd) 'Manuel Fajardo', awarded Thursday the title of Doctor Honoris Causa to professor and founder of the Cuban boxing school, Alcides Sagarra.
Artificer of world and Olympic champions, Sagarra received the award from the hands of the rector of the center of high studies, Silvano Merced, in recognition of his special merits and his dedicated link to the scientific training of professionals in the field of sports.
"On behalf of the university, we offer him our eternal gratitude," Merced said at the tribute ceremony held at Sagarra's home in the municipality of Playa, Havana.
The former coach of great stars such as Teófilo Stevenson, Adolfo Horta and Félix Savón, among others, also received the commemorative stamp for the 50th anniversary of the Uccfd, an institution founded on October 9, 1973 under the name of Escuela Superior de Educación Física (Higher School of Physical Education).
Consuelo Sagarra thanked the recognition on behalf of her father, "of our family, and of all the people who love him because he comes from the center that he himself supported for so long in the formation of young athletes".
The activity was also attended by the first vice president of the National Sports Institute, Raúl Fornés, and the head of the Cuban Boxing Federation, Alberto Puig de la Barca. (Source: Prensa Latina).
