Marifélix Sarría

Havana, Sept 28 (RHC).- Weightlifter Marifélix Sarría made history for that sport in Cuba at the Junior World Weightlifting Championship in León, Spain, by taking the three titles in the maximum division, +87 kg.

In her return to the platforms after being exonerated of an alleged doping case, the young weightlifter from Cienfuegos (central-southern Cuba) won three gold medals with lifts of 115 kg in the snatch and 155 kg in the rebound, for a total of 270 kg.

With her performance, she became the first Cuban world champion in that sport.

Previously, Ludia Montero also won a silver medal in the adult world championship in Pattaya, Thailand, in 2019, and Elizabeth Reyes won two silver medals also in a youth world championship in Crete, Greece, in 2022.

The 18-year-old Cuban's superiority was evident, as her closest escort, Canada's Etta Love took the silver awards with (108-146-254).

"A hug, Marifélix. Prize for constancy and will to win, sustained even in difficult moments, convinced of your attachment to fair play," wrote in X the president of Inder (Cuban Sports Institute), Osvaldo Vento.

"Congratulations to the coaches, to your family and to the family of that sport. Other triumphs will come for Cuba, which applauds you," the sports leader added.
