Havana, Apr 9 (JIT) - Cuba started with a victory in the Norca Women's Handball Tournament Mexico 2025, a qualifier for the World Championship of the discipline.
They faced Puerto Rico, a rival that did not present major difficulties for the team coached by Jorge Luis Coll to the point that at halftime they were already leading 17-10.
This allowed the girls to save for the next matches, which are more difficult, and still win with a 12-goal advantage in the final score of 35-23.
Matanzas' Dianny Gonzalez led the offense with seven goals and now has 63 goals for the national team in only 19 games.
As expected, Lorena Tellez and Gleinnys Reyes were fundamental in that aspect with five goals each and now both surpassed 90 goals with a national team; with the note that Lorena became the top scorer of the called-up players and has only 19 games.
Cuba's next opponent will be Canada, which is in the lead with two victories. The match should be one of the most difficult that the Caribbeans will face in the competition.
As news, it was announced that the break scheduled for the 10th has been eliminated, so they will have matches every day.
Likewise, the organizing committee of the event announced that there will be no semifinals as initially planned, but that first and second places will play directly in the final in search of the winner that will deserve the ticket to the Women's Handball World Championship of Germany and the Netherlands 2025.
