Caracas, July 6 (RHC)-- In Venezuela, a group of armed men attacked a hospital during an opposition protest in the capital city of Caracas, wounding at least five who were close to the medical center. The attack occurred as some of the hospital's doctors participated in a protest against the government of President Nicolas Maduro, and the Constitutional Assembly, according to EFE.
The assailants destroyed the entrance to the Hospital Clinico, in the central district of Libertador, and damaged several of its windows. The Attorney General's office said it had launched an investigation into the attack. "According to preliminary information, at approximately 1 p.m. on Tuesday a group of people riding motorcycles hurled objects at, and opened fire on people who were near the health center," the Attorney General's office said in a statement.
At least 94 people have died since opposition-led protests aimed at toppling the government began in early April, including several people who were burned alive. In addition to those killed, over 1,200 have been injured in the protests.
On Tuesday, Venezuela's Supreme Court held an open preliminary hearing against Attorney General Luisa Ortega Diaz, who is facing accusations of misconduct. The court will determine whether or not to order a trial for professional malpractice in her duties as the nation's lead prosecutor.
Venezuela's Vice President, Tareck El Aissami, has accused Ortega of allowing right-wing violence and sympathizing with those promoting acts to destabilize the country by overthrowing the Bolivarian government. El Aissami says Ortega has allowed crimes committed against the democratically-elected government of Maduro to go unpunished.
