Lima, July 27 (RHC)-- The president-elect of Peru, Pedro Castillo Terrones, will be sworn in as head of state tomorrow, Wednesday, in a ceremony that coincides with the bicentennial of the national independence and to which several foreign dignitaries have confirmed their attendance.
Castillo will receive the presidential sash from the hands of the current president, Francisco Sagasti, before the plenary of the Congress, in a solemn session scheduled for 9 a.m. local time, according to the social networks.
He will then officially assume the presidency for the period 2021-2026 at the Casa de Pizarro, seat of the Government, located in Lima. He will be accompanied by the vice-president-elect, Dina Boluarte.
The following day, the professor from Cajamarca and representative of the Peru Libre party will be sworn in at the Sanctuary of the Pampa de Ayacucho, a site linked to Peruvian history.
There, the pro-independence army won the final victory over the royalist troops and achieved national independence, whose bicentennial is celebrated this July 28.
The presidents of Argentina, Alberto Fernández; Bolivia, Luis Arce; Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso; Colombia, Iván Duque, and Chile, Sebastián Piñera, confirmed their participation in the official events.
The Mexican Foreign Minister, Marcelo Ebrard, will attend on behalf of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, while the Foreign Minister of Uruguay and the Vice President of Brazil, Francisco Bustillo and Hamilton Mourao, respectively, will represent the governors Luis Lacalle Pou and Jair Bolsonaro.
The activities will also be attended by the King of Spain, Felipe VI, who has been in Peru since Tuesday. It will be the first time he attends as monarch to the inauguration of a President of the country, since when he was a prince he witnessed the inauguration of former presidents Alejandro Toledo (in 2001), Alan García (2006) and Ollanta Humala (2011).
This Monday, the Congress elected a center-right coalition to lead it in the first year of Castillo's term. The board of directors is headed by lawyer María del Carmen Alva, from the Acción Popular (centrist) party.
In turn, the first, second and third vice presidencies of the Legislative will be occupied, respectively, by Lady Camones (Alianza Para el Progreso), Enrique Wong (Podemos) and Patricia Chirinos (Avanza País).
Before the vote, the plenary of the Legislative excluded from the election of the board of directors, alleging formal reasons, the third registered list, made up by legislators of center-left forces, among them Perú Libre.
According to what political scientist Paula Távara declared to the press, the election of this board was supported by Fujimorism and shows that "there is not much vocation for dialogue between the opposition benches and the ruling party," she said.
