Lima, June 25 (Andina-RHC) -- Peru’s President Ollanta Humala has said his administration is committed to supporting agricultural farmers through policies aimed at expanding the acreage of land under irrigation to 45,000 hectares.
On the occasion of the National Farmers' Day celebration, the head of State noted the said public policies seek to support farmers to overcome frost damage and to boost agricultural production in communities located in the high Andean regions.
“Agriculture is an important activity to sustain the household economy of small-scale producers and allows having quality products in domestic markets,” President Humala said Tuesday in a phone call to an audience gathered at the Matahuasi district, in Peru’s south-eastern Junin region.
The government's program aims to increase to 45,000 the country's agricultural frontier and to keep working in the fight against hunger and food security in order to have a childhood free from malnutrition.
Furthermore, Humala pointed out Peru's Agricultural Bank (Agrobanco) pursuits to improve access to credit, develop better marketing infrastructure as well as to provide extension and research services to farmers.
