Port-au-Prince, May 14 (RHC)-- Prime Minister Ariel Henry today lamented the shipwreck of a boat off the coast of Puerto Rico, and confirmed that the 11 migrants who died are Haitians.

The head of government assured that the news shocked him and plunged the population into mourning and desolation.

The day before, a boat capsized off the coast of Puerto Rico, while they were allegedly trying to access that territory.

At least 11 women died and 38 other people were rescued, the U.S. Coast Guard confirmed, while the search continues.

The passengers were from Haiti and the Dominican Republic, the Coast Guard said in a statement.

The economic, political and social crisis of insecurity pushed thousands of Haitians to leave the country in search of job opportunities, which caused a serious migratory crisis in mid-September, when about 15,000 arrived at the border between Mexico and the United States.

In March of this year a boat carrying some 300 undocumented Haitian migrants disembarked in the Florida Keys, United States, while another 163 people swam ashore, authorities said at the time.
