Lima, August 12 (RHC)-- The Peruvian president, Pedro Castillo, has again rejected the accusations of corruption against him and denounced that opposition sectors linked to the right wing want to build evidence to incriminate him in order to force his resignation from office.
Castillo said that despite the attacks and smear campaign by the opposition, his government will continue working for the welfare of Peru. "Those who accuse us are those who betray the country. They accuse us of so many things, without evidence. They have not liked the fact that we work with the people, with the teachers, with the peasants," said the Peruvian head of state.
Pedro Castillo asserted that a sector of the opposition will continue "inventing and creating constitutional accusations" against him, but insisted that they will not "distract" him. The Peruvian president made these statements after the decision of the Attorney General, Patricia Benavides, to open a new preliminary investigation against him for alleged acts of corruption.
This would be the sixth investigation of the Public Prosecutor's Office against Castillo, despite the fact that the Constitution only allows accusing the incumbent president for treason and for impeding elections.
For Castillo, the investigations, which also involve his family, are part of a coup operation, allegedly orchestrated by those who already tried to snatch power from him when he won the elections in June 2021 through accusations of a non-existent electoral fraud.
