Mexico City, August 25 (RHC)-- Mexico will address very complex trade issues during the upcoming visit by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken next month, sources from the Mexican Foreign Ministry revealed.

The Mexican government, however, is not interested in the differences within the framework of the Free Trade Agreement (T-MEC), leading to Mexico leaving the treaty.

According to Prensa Latina news agency, the Mexican Foreign Ministry outlined urgent issues to be analyzed with Blinken during his September 12 visit to reach bilateral agreements before the possibility of convening the panels, an arbitration mechanism to solve commercial differences.

During a recent business meeting, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard reported that his office is working in favor of dialogue to avoid having to resort to panels.

One of the most important differences between Mexico and the United States is related to the production of electric cars, a sector in which both countries are very involved financially and technologically to the point that they operate as if it were a single entity in which what happens to one of the parties equally affects the other.

Ebrard said that the Congress in Washington approved an anti-inflationary package that initially contained a very complex provision for Mexico because it favored the production of electric vehicles in the United States, putting Mexico at a disadvantage.

Another issue to be discussed with Blinken is that of the rules of origin that may be disadvantageous for the Mexican automotive industry. They expect to reach an agreement with the United States on this too.

But there are economic and geopolitical differences, new or more serious than expected, due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict or the tensions between China and the United States, which must be taken into account, Ebrard said without going into detail.
