Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a law favoring the carrying of firearms in the state
Havana, April 3 (RHC)-- Despite the increase in violence in the United States, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a law on Monday that annuls the license requirements for carrying concealed firearms in that state.
Under the new rule, people will be able to carry a lethal device without having to comply with previously mandated requirements, such as prior training or background checks. The legislation also includes a provision under which private schools would be able to participate in a controversial program to supposedly increase their security, and which allows for the presence of armed "guards" on campus.
The measure received the support of numerous law enforcement officials in that region, and the National Rifle Association, which called its approval a "historic" victory, a CBS News report detailed. This way, Florida becomes the 26th state in the country that has a law on carrying weapons without a permit.
DeSantis' signing comes just a week after a shooting at a school killed three nine-year-old children and three adults in Nashville, Tennessee.
As revealed by police authorities after the elementary school tragedy, the 28-year-old shooter, Audrey Elizabeth Hale, bought the seven guns that she had legally, a possibility that some attribute to the lax policies in force there.
In recent years, Republicans in the state legislature have passed a series of measures that have weakened regulations, eliminated some permit requirements and made it possible for most residents to carry loaded guns in public without authorization, training or verification.
While the regulations favor a greater proliferation of bullets, so far this year, 429 children under the age of 17 have lost their lives in the country because of them, according to the Gun Violence Archive site.
Since 2020, firearms have overtaken motor vehicle crashes as the leading cause of infant death, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association. (Source: Prensa Latina)
