Ecuadorian police carry out illegal raid on Mexico's Embassy in Quito on April 5th
Mexico City, April 18 (RHC)-- The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, said Wednesday during his morning press conference that all the countries of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) support Mexico for the assault on the embassy in Quito, Ecuador.
In this regard, the Government of Honduras informed President López Obrador that it will withdraw its diplomatic staff from Ecuador as a sign of support to Mexico after the raid on its embassy in Quito on April 5th. "The meeting was called by the President of Honduras, Xiomara Castro and, at the end, she notified me that they are also going to show their solidarity and call their diplomatic representatives, she just did not get to say it. In other words, it is not just the case of Venezuela and we thank them very much," said López Obrador.
Previously, Foreign Minister Enrique Reina informed that Honduras withdrew the consul in Ecuador by instructions of President Xiomara Castro. Honduras joins Venezuela and Mexico who withdrew their diplomatic officials in Ecuador after Ecuadorian police broke into the embassy of the Aztec country to remove former vice president Jorge Glas, who is already in jail.
At the meeting, convened by the pro tempore president of CELAC, Xiomara Castro, a proposal approved by the foreign ministers was made public, in which the member countries condemn the assault on the diplomatic headquarters, demand sanctions against Ecuador, and request a safe-conduct for Glas to be able to go to Mexico.
At the meeting López Obrador was able to confirm the support of the countries of the region. The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, announced the closure of his embassy and consulates in Ecuador, while the president of Bolivia, Luis Arce, assured that he would join the denunciation of the Mexican government. He added that "we proceed to call our Chargé d'Affaires in Ecuador to Tegucigalpa for consultations. Likewise, we will take the necessary steps to support Mexico's actions before the UN and the International Court of Justice".
Likewise, on Wednesday, Honduran President Xiomara Castro notified that she will also temporarily withdraw her diplomats from Ecuador, as a sign of support to Mexico's lawsuit.
The President of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, did not attend the meeting convened by CELAC.
The events, which unleashed the indignation of several nations, occurred last April 5, when Ecuadorian police and military forces violently broke into the diplomatic headquarters of Mexico in Quito, Ecuador, to arrest former Vice President Jorge Glas, who had been a guest since December 17, 2023 and was waiting to travel to the North American nation.
