Bonn, October 22 (RHC-Andina) -- Peru’s Environment Minister and President of COP20, Manuel Pulgar-Vidal, is in Bonn to attend the opening session of the final round of formal negotiations before the 20th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Convention on Climate Change (COP20) is held in Lima from Dec 1 to 12.
The session, which opened on Monday and will run until Saturday, represents a key opportunity for governments to develop in depth a solid text for the new draft agreement on climate change, to be signed during COP21 in 2015 in Paris.
Pulgar-Vidal said: “It is essential that we reach a possible consensus this week on the content and the scope of this information – the draft climate agreement -- as well as on the best way to encourage and guarantee that this information will be clear, transparent and understandable.”
Last but not least, Pulgar-Vidal encouraged country representatives to work in a joint manner. “My presence here shows my total commitment to work with all of you and with the Co-Presidents of the COP20 for success in Lima,” he said.
The Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, Christiana Figueres, recalled “the UN Climate Summit in New York proves that there are means to address climate change".
The UN official emphasized the political will shown in New York and asked negotiators to put in their greatest effort to bring positions together in Bonn, as the last chance to make progress in the agreements before the event in Lima.
