Managua, November 12 (RHC-PL) -- The number of Chikungunya virus cases in Nicaragua reached 582, after another 46 persons were diagnosed with the disease, said Rosario Murillo, coordinator of the Communications and Citizenship Council.

In her regular television address, the coordinator said the 43 patients from Managua department and other three from Masaya are in stable condition.

Nicaraguan authorities continue to take action against Chikungunya virus with fumigation campaigns and by urging the population to support the fight against the mosquitoes. Murillo said the situation might improve due to a change in weather conditions and a decline in rainfall over the next few days.

The Chikungunya virus is a mosquito-borne disease which causes high fever, nausea and headaches, among other symptoms.

Meanwhile, Paraguayan Health Ministry's Integrated Surveillance System has reported two new cases of Chikungunya virus, bringing the count to 7 people infected in the country.

According to an official report in ASUNCION, the new cases are imported from abroad, one of them is a 24 year-old man who came back to the country after living two years in Cartagena, Colombia, and the other one is a 43-year-old Venezuelan national.

The disease was confirmed by the tests conducted at the Central Public Health Laboratories, the statement adds.

So far, Paraguay has reported six imported cases and one who was infected in the country.
