Quito, June 30 (RHC)-- Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa has called for the setting up of an International Environmental Court to strengthen the fight against climate change.
In his opening remarks at an International Conference on Sustainable Development taking place on the Galapagos Islands, President Correa stressed that while countries of the South are said to be financially indebted to the rich North, the North certainly owes a huge "environmental debt" to the countries of the South.
The Ecuadorian head of state highlighted that the world's problem is not associated with a lack of resources, but the unequal distribution of existing resources and urged the implementation of basic strategies in sectors like mining and oil to prevent or mitigate further damages to the environment.
