Havana, September 20 (RHC)-- The First International Seminar "Reality and Challenges of Proclaiming Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace" will be held September 21st through the 23rd in Havana, sponsored by the Regional Coordinator for Latin America and the Caribbean of the World Peace Council (WPC) and the Cuban Movement for Peace and Sovereignty of Peoples.
During the Havana seminar, left-wing intellectuals, social and civil society activists will exchange on the regional implications of the proclamation of the Latin American and Caribbean region as a zone of peace at the 2nd Summit of the Community of Latin America and Caribbean States (CELAC) held in Havana in January 2014.
Delegates will identify and discuss issues affecting regional peace, from the existence of U.S. military bases in almost all regional countries, to military operations carried out by the U.S.'s IV Fleet in adjacent seas, national conflicts encouraged by right-wing sectors with foreign support and their social, economic and environmental costs. Delegates will also analyze the real benefits of the elimination of nuclear weapons and complete disarmament in the region and the world.
The seminar also aims to propose concrete, concerted actions to consolidate the region as a peace zone and to extend that condition to other geographical areas of the world.
