New York, September 20 (RHC)--At the UN, Deputy Foreign Minister Abelardo Moreno said the U.S.'s Cuban Adjustment Act and the wet-foot-dry-foot policy are an encouragement to human trafficking and illegal migration.
Addressing a UN Summit on Migrants and Refugees, Moreno said in dealing with the migratory issue, dialogue and cooperation among states are essential, and he regretted that policies contrary to this spirit should still remain in place, like the Cuban Adjustment Act, which gives Cuban nationals ready access to the U.S. and a preferential migratory treatment there.
He also lashed out at the wet-food-dry-foot policy, which welcomes Cubans reaching U.S. territory by whatever means. The U.S. measure, he said, turns Cuban migrants into victims of traffickers and generates unwanted situations for Latin American and Caribbean nations used as stepping stones by migrants to reach the U.S.
On the current migratory situation in Europe, the Cuban deputy foreign minister urged the UN General Assembly to focus on the underlying causes generating the migratory flows, calling on the recipient nations to address the flows from a perspective of assistance and cooperation.
