Havana, May 20 (RHC) – Cuban academics attending the International Congress of the Latin American Studies Association (LASA), May 21-24 in Chicago, Illinois, denounced in Havana the delay of their visas to travel to the United States.

During a meeting at the Association of Cuban Writers and Artists (UNEAC), poetess Nancy Morejon described as unacceptable the fact that the visas were granted in so many cases with very little time before the date of travel.

It is unacceptable that this happens due to what it means in terms of the agenda to meet, said Morejon, who co-chairs the Cuba chapter of LASA.

The writer said that although 125 visas were granted, there are still another four pending. According to sources, the delayed visas might bring difficulties for the program, since not all members of the group could make it on time to Chicago, as they would not be able to change flights.

The 32nd International Congress of the Latin American Studies Association will focus on democracy and memory, according to its official page. The Association groups Latin American scholars in all disciplines and promotes intellectual debate, research and knowledge in this part of the world.
