Havana, Dec 20 (RHC) A brigade of Cuban teachers arrived Tuesday in Honduras as part of a collaboration agreement between the educational institutions of that Central American nation and the Caribbean Island.

Made up of 123 educators, the team will help fight illiteracy there, through the Cuban method "Yo Sí puedo" (Yes I Can), a program that has taught millions of people in some 30 countries to read and write.

Former president and current presidential advisor, Manuel Zelaya, welcomed the teachers and highlighted Cuba's solidarity despite being subjected to a six-decade-long blockade by the United States.

The teachers from the island were also received by the Minister of Education of Honduras, Daniel Esponda, and the Cuban Vice Minister of that portfolio, Eugenio González.

Official data reveal that 12 percent of the population over 15 years of age cannot read or write in Honduras, for this reason, President Xiomara Castro has proposed to reduce the illiteracy level to five percent in the next four years. (Source: PL)
