Transition to digital television in Havana

Havana, March 17 (RHC) The Cuban capital will be the next province to implement the partial transition process to Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) in the country, starting in the second quarter of this year.

Engineer Carlos Arencibia García, technical director of RadioCuba, informed the Granma newspaper that the conciliation with the Havana authorities is currently developing to begin the process in Havana, before continuing through Mayabeque and Matanzas.

He pointed out that the transition process was fully implemented in the provinces of Pinar del Río and Artemisa.

In general, the partial transition consists of eliminating analog transmissions from educational channels, freeing up the technological infrastructure associated with it. It is divided into three zones –western, central and eastern– for better implementation from the point of view of the assurances.

There are two essential conditions for its deployment: the DTT-SD signal being received in all classrooms of the educational system, and the digital receiver being delivered and installed to all social assistance beneficiaries.

One of the objectives of this process is to increase the coverage area of the DTT-SD service, equaling it to the current analog television coverage of educational channels.

It also seeks to free the 700 megahertz frequency band, for the deployment of 4G, as well as the television equipment to dispose of parts and pieces. This would help sustain the network of analog transmitters that remain in operation. (Source: granma.cu)
