Varadero, Cuba, will host the second edition of Aguas Abiertas Gran Retto
Havana, July 24 (RHC)-- The Cuban beach resort of Varadero will host the second edition of the Gran Retto Open Water event on September 16 and 17.
Under the auspices of the Mexican brand Gran Retto, and with the support of the Cuban Ministry of Tourism and the commercial company Cubadeportes S.A, the competition will involve swimmers, triathletes, clubs, swimming schools and the general public from both Cuba and foreign countries in order to promote open water swimming.
As explained by the website www.radio26.cu, as in the first edition held in 2022, the contest will compete in distances of 750 and 1,500 meters, 5 and 10 kilometers in categories divided by age. There will also be a special one for people with disabilities.
Promoting tourism in Cuba in terms of holding sports events becomes a purpose of the Gran Retto Open Water in Cuba that will demonstrate its hotel potential through the services of the Meliá Las Américas, Starfish Varadero and Starfish Cuatro Palmas facilities.
In the first edition of the Gran Retto, more than 150 swimmers attended the fair representing countries such as Colombia, the United States, Mexico and Cuba with ages ranging from under 10 years of age to over 70.
During the debut of the event in 2022, the director of the Gran Retto brand, Luis Mario Villareal, said that Varadero becomes an ideal place for the execution of this type of competition in open water thanks to its unbeatable climate, which is why the event is expected to be held annually, an objective that will be met in 2023.
