Solidarity movement with Cuba condemns US acquittal of perpetrator of attack against its embassy in Washington

Havana, May 10 (RHC) The Bridges of Love movement today condemned the decision of a United States judge to acquit the author of the terrorist attack against the Cuban embassy ​​in Washington, on April 30, 2020.

Carlos Lazo, coordinator of the movement, commented it is ironic that the United States has Cuba on a list of terrorist countries while declaring someone who committed violent acts against a diplomatic representation free of charges.

A similar criterion was raised by Cheryl LaBash, co-president of the National Network of Solidarity with Cuba (NNOC), who considers the perpetrator of the attack a danger to himself and to society. She emphasized that the judge's ruling gives the green light to politically motivated violent crimes against Cuban diplomatic missions.

On May 1, a judge from the District of Columbia acquitted Alexander Alazo - of Cuban origin and resident in the United States since 2010 - of the four charges against him of the terrorist attack against the Cuban embassy in Washington in 2020, alleging insanity conditions of the perpetrator.

A statement from the Cuban Foreign Ministry expressed that it learned of the decision with deep concern and recalled that Alazo himself confessed that he went that morning with the intention of hitting whatever was in front of him, including human beings.

The Ministry warned that the decision made by the judge sends a dangerous message of impunity for those who propose to take violent actions against diplomatic headquarters.

On the night of September 24, 2023, an individual threw two Molotov cocktails over the perimeter fence and the façade of the Cuban embassy in Washington, three years and five months after the attack perpetrated by Alazo.
