UN Bodies Commit to Support Cuba's Environmental Efforts

Havana, September 22 (RHC)-- The office of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Cuba and the World Fund for Nature Conservation (WWF-Holland) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to support Cuba in that area.

The document was signed by Myrta Kaulard, UNDP resident representative in Cuba, and Kirsten Schujit, executive director of the World Fund for Nature Conservation-Holland.

In statements to reporters, UNDP representative Kaulard highlighted that the MoU is in keeping with the Sustainable Development Objectives of the United Nations and emphasizes support for adaptation to climate change and to sectors of production and services.

Under the MoU, the two international organizations commit themselves to strengthening their actions in Cuba to promote the sustainable development of natural resources and the conservation of Cuba's natural heritage in the framework of the implementation of the National Plan for economic and Social Development through 2030.

The document covers such areas as ecosystem management, protected areas, water resources, food safety, sustainable agriculture, climate change, tourism, renewable energy and transport.
