The festival Les voix humaines or The human voices kicked off in the Cuban capital with a concert by the Cuban choir Entrevoces directed by maestra, Digna Guerra.

The Cuban choral group, which is part of the Cuban National Choir, opened the festival at the Fine Art Museum’s concert hall at 6 p.m. with the premier on the island of pieces of the series Circle songs by renowned US vocalist Bobby McFerrin.

Due to its versatility the Cuban choir Entrevoces sang a very demanding repertoire that included, in addition to the above mentioned pieces, works by contemporary composers, such as US’s Eric Whitaker, Lithuania’s Vitautas Miskinis; classical Latin American pieces by Argentina’s Carlos Guastavino, César Isella and Venezuela’s Pedro Elías Gutiérrez; Bulgarian folk songs; a selection of negro spirituals and a version of Aleluya by Handel.

The cultural event, which will run through October 18th, has been designed and coordinated by renowned Cuban musician and orchestra conductor, Leo Brouwer, to highlight such an art form as singing, including a capella music and the vocal possibilities of countertenors.
