Judoka Idelannis Gomez placed Cuba in 13th place among the 63 countries participating in the individual tournament of the World Youth Championships, held in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Gomez won the 70 kg bronze medal on Friday.

Havana, August 13 (RHC)-- Judoka Idelannis Gomez placed Cuba in 13th place among the 63 countries participating in the individual tournament of the World Youth Championships, held in Guayaquil, Ecuador. Gomez won the 70 kg bronze medal on Friday.

According to the International Federation's website (www.ijf.org), the Cuban got one of the two bronze medals of the division by defeating Germany's Sarah Mehlau by Ippon, a victory that joined the one won this Wednesday by Kimy Bravo (66 kg).

In the preliminaries, the Caribbean bantamweight beat French Florine Soula and Czech Julie Zarybnicka by Ippon, in that order, but then lost by the same way to German Samira Bock, who sent her to the repechage, where she defeated Colombian Brenda Olaya by Wazari.

With these results, Gomez guaranteed to discuss the bronze medal and reached it with the victory over Mehlau, who finally finished in fifth place.

This Friday, Cuban Serguei Rodriguez (90 kg) also had some action, but lost by Ippon in his debut against American Alexander Knauf.

Cuba's Blanca Cabrera (52 kg) and Lutmary García (63 kg) also failed to win medals.

Today will be the last date of the individual tournament. Dayanara Curbelo (+78 kg) and Omar Curz (+100 kg) will be competing for the largest of the Antilles. Their first rivals will be Ana Sherazadishvili of Georgia and Kanan Nasibov of Azerbaijan, respectively.

The actions at the Voltaire Paladines Polo Coliseum will close on Sunday with the mixed team tournament, which summons the 57, 70 and +70 (f), and 73, 90 and +90 kg (m) divisions.
