Havana, October 13 (RHC)-- Brazilian runner Alison dos Santos and Grenada javelinist Anderson Peters were included among the candidates for the 2022 Best Athlete of the Year award.

According to World Athletics, their names were chosen by a panel of experts from the six continental areas to compete in a popular poll that began this week on the Internet.

Dos Santos was world champion in the 400m hurdles at the event organized in Eugene, United States, dominated his discipline in the Diamond League and broke the South American record with 46.29 seconds.

Meanwhile, Peters closed with the best world record of the season, a 93.07 meters, which places him fifth in the all-time ranking, in addition to also being crowned in Eugene.

However, the great favorite for the award is the Swedish pole vaulter Armand Duplantis, author of three world records this season, with the opposition of the Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge, who beat his marathon world record in Berlin.

The other finalists are Slovenia's Kristjan Ceh, Morocco's Soufiane El Bakkali, Americans Noah Lyles and Grant Holloway, Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Cuban-born Portuguese Pedro Pablo Pichardo.

A tripartite voting process will determine the finalists, as the World Athletics Council's vote will count for 50 percent of the result, while those of the World Athletics Family and the public will each count for 25 percent of the final result.

The election closes at midnight on Monday, October 31, after which World Athletics will announce the five female and five male finalists, and the winners will be announced in December.
