Havana, January 4 (RHC)-- Cuban agriculture plans to be self-sufficient in electricity consumption through the more extensive use of renewable sources of energy, such as biogas.
Small and medium biogas producing plants are to be set up in agricultural installations, especially those raising pigs, for cooking feed for the animals and, at the same time, producing electricity for local consumption.
All pig raising centers with three thousand animals or more will start the installation of biogas facilities this year, making an important contribution to the processing of residues and to the protection of the environment.
This means that seven thousand large pig farms in Cuba are now under contractual obligation to install biodigesters.
The end product of the biodigester operation is biofertilizer, rich in nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous. At the same time the process reduces the amount of atmospheric pollution.
The use of Biogas can also be extended to poultry farms and other agricultural installations, adding up to considerable savings in terms of fuel and cutting down contamination.
Ministry of Agriculture experts are available to provide information and training to farm operators on the practical and financial advantages of biogas.
