Havana, November 9 (RHC)-- U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump stunned the world today by defeating Hillary Clinton in general elections in that country.

Backed by white Americans unhappy with the political and economic elites, Trump broke poll predictions and scored victory just as the world was getting ready to see the first woman in U.S. history win the presidency.

By midnight Tuesday, a combination of rural vote and white labor vote swept away the sophisticated strategies of the Democratic campaign and wrote off the effect of the Latino and minority vote, which appeared to favor Clinton.

Described by the Washington Post as a historic beating, the final electoral vote count showed 276 for Trump while the Democrat candidate scored only 218.

But for many analysts, U.S. voters chose a demagogue that revived some of America's darkest traditions, and placed insult and disqualification at the center of political discourse.
