Brasilia, June 3 (RHC)-- Two northeastern Brazilian regions have declared states of emergency after floods this past week left at least 10 people dead and tens of thousands without homes.

Pernambuco state has taken the heaviest toll. More than 55,000 people are now known to have been displaced by floodwaters there. Seven people were killed in a mudslide in the neighbouring state of Alagoas. And many schools are shut and highways remain blocked.

Brazil's President Michel Temer, who is fighting for his political future over corruption allegations, flew to the the disaster zone earlier to meet local officials. The federal government has promised to provide almost $10 million to support the aid effort.
