Guantánamo, May 4 (RHC)-- More than 200 peace activists from 20 nations around the world are gathered in Cuba’s eastern Guantánamo province for the 6th International Seminar for Peace and the Elimination of Foreign Military Bases.

Silvio Platero, president of the Cuban Peace Movement said that delegates have agreed to officially proclaim February 23rd -- World Day for Peace and against Foreign Military Bases.

At the seminar, which runs through Monday, May 6th, delegates will condemn Washington's hegemony and its policy of interference in the internal affairs of countries in the region and around the world.

In the current complex situation, marked by U.S. attempts to revive the Monroe Doctrine and do away with progressive governments and movements in our region, specially Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua, peace activists at the seminar in Guantánamo agreed that social movements must uphold and defend the proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace, as agreed by regional leaders during the 2nd Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, held in January of 2014 in Havana.

Organizers said the seminar serves as an opportunity to strengthen the Global Coalition, set in Dublin, Ireland, against U.S. and NATO’s military bases around the globe.

Participants in the seminar will demand also the closure of the Naval Base that Washington runs on an illegally occupied portion of Cuban territory in Guantánamo against the will of the Cuban people.
