Carlos “Taso” Zenón, leader of protests against U.S. Navy in Vieques, Puerto Rico, dies at 84

San Juan, November 24 (RHC)-- In Puerto Rico, beloved social leader Carlos “Taso” Zenón has died at the age of 84.  Zenón was a longtime activist who for decades led the fight against the U.S. Navy’s occupation of the island of Vieques, his hometown, where the U.S. government tested weapons and held military training exercises.

Between 1978 and 1983, Zenón and other fishermen repeatedly confronted U.S. Navy ships and halted planned military exercises.  The Navy finally left Vieques in 2003, after bombing it with napalm, depleted uranium and other toxic munitions for years.
