Quito, October 3 (RHC)-- New clashes between police and inmates were recorded in the Litoral penitentiary in Guayaquil, when the authorities carried out an operation in the prison, which was the scene of a massacre last Tuesday, after a riot.

Prisoners shot at police and soldiers in the same prison in the Ecuadorian port of Guayaquil where there was a riot on Tuesday that left at least 118 dead, including six decapitated, according to police reports.

The agents neutralized the action and "control is maintained" of the penitentiary, said the police, who specified that there were four wounded.

Dozens of relatives of inmates came to the outside of the prison complex to know the health status of their loved ones.

The National Police indicated as of this Saturday, the bodies of 101 inmates killed in the Penitenciaría del Litoral, last Tuesday, have been identified after interviews with relatives and biometric technical procedures of faces and fingerprints.

Another similar incident occurred in the Regional jail of Guayaquil, located on the road to Daule, 500 meters from the Penitenciaría del Litoral, due to disturbances inside.  The police assured that they neutralized this action and, at the moment, control and order is maintained in the prison. They did not report on the consequences of the action of the prisoners.

On the other hand, the Servicio Nacional de Atención a los Privados de Libertad (SNAI) informed that the breakfast, lunch and dinner service for the inmates of the Centro de Rehabilitación Social Regional del Guayas is suspended due to the crisis, but would be resumed.

"As a result of control and search operations [...] inside the CRS Guayas N 4 (Regional) where facts of public domain were registered; the food service for persons deprived of liberty was suspended for breakfast, lunch and dinner for security measures," said the SNAI statement.
