Nicaraguan foreign minister says OAS is an instrument of U.S. imperialism

Managua, November 20 (RHC)-- The Foreign Minister of Nicaragua, Denis Moncada, said Friday that the Organization of American States (OAS) is the instrument of the U.S. government to carry out its interference in the internal affairs of nations in the region.

In an exclusive interview for the program Es Noticia, broadcast by teleSUR, the diplomat reiterated that "Nicaragua makes use of its full sovereignty rights (...).  We have taken the decision to denounce the OAS charter and disassociate ourselves from that organization."

"The OAS continues to be the instrument created by the U.S. to project its hegemonic policy of intervention, threatd and aggression against the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean," he emphasized.

Earlier on Friday, Foreign Minister Moncada, with instructions from President Daniel Ortega, announced that the Central American nation initiated the process to withdraw from the OAS, with the purpose of "putting an end to an unfriendly, offensive and outrageous relationship for Nicaragua."

He further stated that the actions of the OAS "have been a reality and they continue to take advantage of the subordination of some governments of Latin America and the Caribbean that do not respond to the interests of their respective peoples."

Foreign Minister Moncada recalled that Nicaragua has been consistent in its struggle for the defense of national sovereignty and of the countries also attacked by the U.S., as well as by colonialist powers.

"Nicaragua, at the head of the Government of President Ortega and Vice President Rosario (Murillo), has maintained a position of struggle, defense and strengthening of the anti-imperialist and anti-colonialist positions of powers such as the U.S. and some countries of the European Union," he stressed.

The diplomat also spoke about the importance of continuing to strengthen the unity of the peoples, affirming that the regional integration that has been promoted through organizations such as the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America - Peoples' Trade Agreement (ALBA-TCP), the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), among others, allows "advancing with the proposals and interests of the peoples".

Likewise, he indicated that he expects the peoples of other Latin American and Caribbean countries to demand their respective governments to withdraw from the OAS, considering that it is an unsuitable instrument.

"The peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean are moving forward and becoming aware of the maneuvers that affect their own interests. We hope that the peoples demand that their governments maintain a position in the OAS that respects other countries, and that they gradually withdraw from an organization that is harmful to nations."

On the other hand, he stated that the new international order continues to be a demand of the countries, for which it is necessary to "strengthen respect for international law, the UN Charter, the sovereignty of countries, peoples and governments."
