Bogota, November 23 (RHC)-- The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, has arrived in Colombia to participate in the commemoration of the fifth anniversary of the Peace Agreement.

Upon his arrival in Bogota, Guterres said that this is a visit "of solidarity with the Colombian people who today give the world a very important example of affirmation of peace," at a time when "unfortunately" there are "so many conflicts."

During his two-day stay in the South American country, António Guterres will meet with victims of the Colombian conflict, government delegates and former high commanders of the insurgent group Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC-EP).

Upon his arrival in Colombia, the UN Secretary General was received by the Vice President and Foreign Minister, Marta Lucia Ramirez, as well as several members of the Government and the UN representative in Colombia, Carlos Ruiz Massieu.

"This visit is very important on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the agreement between the Government and the FARC because what it does precisely is to endorse all the progress that has been made in the implementation of that agreement," said the foreign minister.

For her part, Ruiz Massieu affirmed that the presence of Guterres in Colombia "is a message for the country to persist in the path of peace and reconciliation."

Guterres will meet with the Verification Mission, as well as with representatives of UN agencies, funds and programs present in Colombia.  Later, together with the President of the country, Ivan Duque, he will visit the former Territorial Space for Training and Reincorporation of Llanogrande in the municipality of Dabeiba in the department of Antioquia.  He will also meet with the president of the Comunes party and signatory of the Agreement, Rodrigo Londoño.

On Wednesday, the fifth anniversary of the signing of the peace agreement, Duque and Guterres will participate in the central event to be held at the headquarters of the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP).
