Tegucigalpa, November 28 (RHC)-- Nearly 5.2 million Hondurans are called to the polls this Sunday to elect the president of the Republic and three designates (vice presidents), as well as 128 deputies to the National Congress and 20 representatives to the Central American Parliament.

In addition, voters will be able to vote for the mayors, vice mayors and aldermen of the 298 municipalities of the 18 departments of this Central American nation.

Among the 13 aspirants to succeed Juan Orlando Hernández, Nasry Asfura (National Party, right) and Xiomara Castro (Libertad y Refundación, Libre, left) stand out as the favorites.

For the suffrage, 5,755 voting centers and 18 293 polling stations have been set up, which will remain open from 07:00 local time (13:00 GMT) until 16:00 (23:00 GMT).

The sanitary protocols establish the obligatory use of masks, to keep distance in the premises, and to disinfect the voting area and the electoral supplies after each vote.   In this process for the first time, the biometric identification system (fingerprint registration) will be used, implemented to avoid identity theft or duplicity of votes.

The National Electoral Council of Honduras accredited some 7,000 observers, 400 of them coming from other countries to monitor the fluidity and transparency of the process.
