Brazilian STF suspends carrying of weapons in Federal District

Brasilia, December 29 (RHC)-- The Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF) has determined to temporarily suspend the permit to carry and transport weapons in the Federal District, to ensure the safety of President Luiz Inácio Lula Da Silva during his inauguration next Sunday, January 1st.

"Minister Alexandre de Moraes determined the temporary suspension of the carrying of firearms in the Federal District from 18:00 hours this Wednesday," expresses a statement from the entity on its Twitter social network account.  The measure will be in force during the ceremonies that will be held the following day, Monday, January 2nd, as part of the beginning of the new presidency.

"The decision extends to the transportation of weapons and ammunition by collectors, shooters and hunters," the text also clarified, stating that whoever disrespects the temporary suspension of weapons will be committing the crime of illegal possession.

The decision came after a request from the president-elect's team, which expressed its concerns for Lula's safety and that of those who will participate in the events in Brasília, especially after a man was arrested on Saturday, December 24th, near the city's airport for attempting to use an explosive device.

However, the agency clarified that "the decision prohibiting weapons does not apply to members of the Armed Forces, members of the Unified Public Security System, members of the Legislative and Judicial Police and constituted private security and cash transport companies."
