Guatemala City, September 3 (Prensa Latina)-- Demonstrators marched over the weekend through several streets of Guatemala City to the National Palace of Culture (headquarters of the Executive of Guatemala) in defense of democracy and to prevent a coup d'état.

Civil society organizations, collectives, families, elderly, children, Lgbtiq+ population and students carried national flags, banners and to the rhythm of drums shouted "here is the strength of the people."

"Consuelo, golpista, you are the terrorist" was the central slogan of the protest, in reference to the Attorney General, Consuelo Porras, who was asked to resign, along with other officials and judges.

As they passed by, demonstrators placed black ribbons in rejection of corruption and stated that "they are fed up with everything that those in power do."

"This is a cycle of protests that is just beginning," said one of the organizers before the beginning of the march, while some demonstrators acknowledged that they left from several departments in the early morning to join the call.

The president-elect of the country, Bernardo Arévalo, denounced the day before an ongoing coup d'état and called for unity to defeat the coup forces, "who intend to keep us submerged in corruption, impunity and poverty", he said.

The current deputy and former deputy warned that there are still four months to the inauguration in which the "political mafias" will try to consummate their strategy contrary to the popular will expressed at the ballot box.

At the request of the MP, the Registrar of Citizens of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal, Ramiro Muñoz, complied this week with the order of a judge to suspend the legal personality of the Movimiento Semilla party.

The Board of Directors of the Congress (unicameral) decided to disregard the Semilla bench and declared it independent, in view of alleged anomalies in the constitution of that political force in 2018, which keeps this Central American nation in tension.

The central park La Paz of Coban, capital city of the Alta Verapaz department, hosts a concentration called United for Democracy.

At 8 a.m. local time on Monday, Santa Cruz del Quiché will gather residents with the slogan Que renuncien, and simultaneously a sit-in is planned in front of the headquarters of the Public Prosecutor's Office throughout Guatemala.
