Caracas, September 8 (RHC)-- Venezuela has granted a safe-conduct pass to Edmundo Gonzalez, who had been seeking political asylum in the Embassy of Spain in Caracas.  He left the Venezuelan capital for Madrid on Saturday.

Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez reported that the Government of President Nicolás Maduro granted the safe-conduct pass "for the sake of the tranquility and political peace of the country."

The former presidential candidate of the far-right, Edmundo González, had "voluntarily taken refuge in the embassy of the Kingdom of Spain in Caracas for several days," requesting that Madrid process his political asylum.

Delcy Rodriguez said that once the pertinent contacts between both governments had taken place, and in adherence to International Law, Venezuela allowed him to board the plane that would take him to Spain.

The vice president stressed in her message that "this conduct reaffirms the respect for the Law that has prevailed in the actions of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in the international community," adding that more details will soon be announced.
