This FBI photo shows explosives discovered from the family home of Brad Spafford in Virginia

Washington, January 2 (RHC)-- The FBI says its investigators have discovered the largest cache of “finished explosive devices” during the arrest of a man earlier this month on a farm in Virginia.  The discovery of that scale has been without precedent in the history of the FBI.

On December 17, investigators uncovered more than 150 homemade bombs on the farm after raiding the family home of Brad Spafford, 36, who was tipped off by a neighbor that he was stockpiling weapons and ammunition.

According to documents filed in the United States District Court in Virginia on December 30, Spafford had used pictures of President Joe Biden for shooting target practice at a local shooting range and "stated that he believed political assassinations should be brought back."

The FBI assessed some explosives as pipe bombs, which were mostly found "in a detached garage, organized by color" and others were located in a backpack in a bedroom, which Spafford shares with his wife and two young children.

The backpack, the court filing said, had been labeled "#nolivesmatter.” bSome of the explosives were also "preloaded into an apparent wearable vest" alongside "numerous tools and materials for manufacturing explosives, a home-made mortar, and riot gear.”

Spafford has so far only been charged with possessing an unregistered short-barrelled rifle.  His attorneys have argued he should be released pending trial, telling the court in a filing on Tuesday that he has "no criminal record and no history of substance abuse or mental illness."

Federal prosecutors, however, said Spafford would likely face additional charges over the explosives, which each carry a maximum sentence of ten years of imprisonment.
